Reshaping Care for Older People (RCOP) is a national initiative aimed at improving services for older people by shifting care towards home with a focus on anticipatory care and prevention.
Why do we need to change?
Preparing for an increasingly ageing population is one of our biggest national challenges. Our older population (65+) is likely to increase by around two thirds in the next twenty years (2010 – 2030) and because of this we need to change how we deliver care.
Around 90,000 older people in Scotland receive some kind of care, whether in their own home, a care home or long-term hospital care. If we continue delivering care the way we do right now, an extra 23,000 people will need care by 2016.
We must also harness longevity and value it as an asset. We know that older people are one of our greatest assets and as the population grows so does the nations capacity of knowledge, talent and ability. We need to work with older people to make the most of this!
