Developing positive oral health promoting behaviours during the early years is a key factor when it comes to improving oral health. The use of a multi- disciplinary approach between all professionals involved in Early Years education and care is essential to ensure consistency of messages, integrated care and services responsive to the needs of children.
Childsmile is a national programme to improve the dental health of children in Scotland. There are four main elements of the programme.
Providing all nursery and primary one children with a take home oral health pack containing a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste alongside supervised toothbrushing in nurseries for all children aged 3 upwards.
Childsmile Dental Practice
Supporting children from birth and families to develop good oral health behaviours.
Childsmile Nursery and School
Targeted at children who would benefit from additional preventative extra care. Fluoride varnish is applied twice yearly to children’s teeth.
