Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme
This is an evidenced based 2 year intensive weight loss programme which aims to help those living with Type 2 Diabetes to reverse it (remission).
Remission is when blood glucose levels are below the diabetes range which means you no longer need to take diabetes medication.
This programme is suitable for adults aged 18 – 65 years who meet the following criteria:
- Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in the past 6 years
- Have a BMI of 25 or above
- Currently not prescribed insulin to treat your diabetes
- Currently not pregnant or breast-feeding
We will need to check your recent long-term blood glucose levels (HbA1c) as part of our pre-programme checks so you will be offered a blood test. We will also discuss the medical management of your diabetes with your GP as some of your medications may need to be stopped or doses reduced.
The programme involves 3 key stages:
Stage 1 (12 Weeks): Total Diet Replacement: all food will be replaced with 4 nutritionally complete soups and shakes.
Stage 2 (12 weeks): Food Reintroduction: where you will gradually reduce your soups and shakes re-introducing calorie controlled meals, one at a time.
Stage 3 (18 months): Weight Loss Maintenance We will help you plan what changes you need to have in place to help you maintain your new lower weight.
Target weight loss is at least 15kg (2.5 stone or more)
You can find out more about the evidence behind this programme from Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT).
