If you’ve been scheduled for a skin biopsy, this page outlines what to expect before, during and after your procedure.
Before Your Appointment
- No special preparation is needed. You may eat and drink as normal.
- Consent: The biopsy team will explain the procedure and ask you to sign a consent form.
- If you take warfarin: Please have your INR checked 2–5 days before your appointment and bring the results with you.
What Happens During the Biopsy
- This procedure involves curettage and cautery, where a circular blade (curette) is used to shave off the lesion at the skin surface.
- It is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain.
- The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.
- The wound will be cauterised and dressed. No stitches are required.
Aftercare and Results
- A scar may remain – this will be discussed with you on the day.
- You can drive yourself home after the procedure.
- You’ll receive an aftercare leaflet with advice.
- If the wound becomes red, swollen or discharges pus, please contact your GP as this may indicate infection.
- Biopsy results will be sent to you by letter within 4–6 weeks. If you haven’t received your results after 6 weeks, contact us on 01786 434098.
