We provide care and support for adolescents and young adults with gynaecological conditions at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. These services are delivered through our General Gynaecology Clinic.

Referral to Gynaecology

You can be referred by:

• Your GP or practice nurse
• Another hospital specialist
• Early pregnancy services
• Sexual health services
• Following admission to the gynaecology ward

Please note: You cannot refer yourself to the Gynaecology Department.

We’ll ensure you see the right specialist for your condition, which may involve attending one of our specialist clinics.

You may be referred if you have:

• Heavy/Painful/irregular periods
• Periods that are difficult to manage
• Amenorrhoea (Absent periods)
• Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
• Pain in your vagina or vulva
• Ovarian cysts

What will happen at my appointment?

When you arrive:

• You will be greeted at reception.
• Clinic staff may take your weight and height measurements.

During your consultation:

• The doctor or nurse will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any medication you take.
• Some patients may require a physical examination.
• Investigations such as blood tests and vaginal swabs may be carried out during your visit.

Additional steps:

• You may be referred for an ultrasound scan (often a vaginal ultrasound, where the probe is placed inside the vagina for clearer images of the womb and ovaries).
• Follow-up appointments may be arranged to discuss test results and treatment plans.
• In some cases, referral to other specialist services may be necessary.

• What are the options for treatment?
• What are the risks and benefits of each treatment?
• How soon will I get results?
• Do I need to come back to the clinic for review?
