You probably have a small break in one of the bones (called the radial head) in your elbow. This causes swelling (an effusion), pain and reduced movement.

• These fractures usually heal well with time and use – no specific treatment is required. Routine follow up is unnecessary.
• A sling should hold your elbow in a comfortable position for a few days. You should wean yourself off this as your pain settles. Aim to remove the sling completely as you feel able.
• Ice may help to ease pain.
• Over the counter medication can be helpful. We recommend paracetamol as first line pain relief. (Always check the label before use.)

Forcible stretching is unnecessary but try to regularly move your elbow. Also make sure to keep your shoulder and wrist moving. Elbow exercises can be found on NHS Inform.

Symptoms may take up to 6 weeks to settle. There may be slightly reduced movement to the elbow – especially on straightening, but this is unlikely to affect your function.
