Arm/Hand in Plaster Cast
- Use your sling during the day for 2 days or as directed by staff.
- Try to keep your hand higher than your elbow.
- In bed, rest your arm on a pillow or as comfortably as possible.
- Attend your outpatient appointment.
Leg in Plaster Cast
- Do not walk on your plaster cast unless you are instructed to do so.
- When sitting or lying, keep your foot higher than your hip to help reduce swelling.
- If you are told to walk on your plaster cast, you will be given a shoe to protect the plaster and prevent slipping. Wear the shoe whenever you are up and about.
Looking After Your Plaster Cast
- The aim of this leaflet is to let you know how to look after your plaster cast and how to get in touch if you have any problems.
- Your plaster will take either 30 minutes or 48 hours to dry (your care team will advise).
- Please leave your plaster uncovered during this time and let it dry naturally!
Important Information
- Do not place any items inside your plaster cast (e.g., knitting needles to scratch the skin).
- Do not try to cut or trim your plaster cast yourself, as this can be very dangerous.
- Ask staff for advice on waterproof covers for showering or bathing.
- Keep your plaster dry, as water will destroy it.

- The plaster cast itself should be comfortable, but expect some pain or discomfort from your injury.
- To help reduce pain and swelling, keep your affected limb raised as much as possible and move all joints above and below your plaster to avoid stiffness and soreness.
- If you have an increase in pain (more than your initial injury or surgery), please contact us using the numbers provided below.
