A FibroScan is a non-invasive procedure (the scan does not enter your body or break your skin). It is a type of ultrasound that assesses the liver’s stiffness (fibrosis) and the amount of fat in the liver. The examination is painless, quick, and easy.
Why do I need this scan?
A FibroScan is requested when you have abnormal liver blood tests or an increased risk of fatty changes or scarring on your liver. The result will help monitor and assess the level of scarring or fat in your liver and guide any follow-up or treatment you might need.
Benefits of having a FibroScan
- Early detection of liver issues
- Non-invasive and painless
- Quick and easy procedure
Preparation Instructions
- Do not eat anything for 3 hours before your FibroScan.
- You may drink small sips of water or clear fluid up until your scan, but avoid large amounts.
- Continue to take your usual medications.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing, as the scan is performed on your tummy.
During the scan you will be asked to lie on the examination couch, place your right arm above your head, and cross your legs (right over left). The team will gently feel your tummy to locate your liver, apply a water-based gel, and place the scanning probe against your skin. You may feel slight pressure and a vibration or “flick” from the probe, but it should not hurt. If you experience discomfort, let the team know.
Results
A report will be sent to the doctor who referred you. They will contact you or arrange an appointment to discuss the results, either by letter or telephone.
What if I choose not to have a FibroScan?
If you choose not to have the FibroScan, it may be more difficult for your doctor to accurately assess your liver. FibroScan is the recommended method to investigate fat and scarring in the liver. If you are unable or choose not to have a FibroScan, you may require a liver biopsy. Your doctor can discuss this with you in more detail.
