Lisa Hertwig from Alloa – Lung and Kidney Transplant Recipient

Lisa Hertwig from Alloa, who lives with cystic fibrosis, underwent a life-saving lung transplant in 2016. However, complications led to kidney disease, requiring routine dialysis three times a week at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

Lisa faced a long wait for a kidney transplant from a deceased donor, with lower success rates and uncertainty about when a match would be found.

However, when Lisa shared her need for a kidney transplant, three friends volunteered for testing. Despite Lisa’s rare blood type, her close friend Helen Kippen was found to be a perfect match. Motivated by personal experiences of loss, Helen decided to donate her kidney to Lisa.

On 3 December 2025, both underwent surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The transplant was successful, and Lisa’s new kidney began functioning immediately. This live donation significantly improved Lisa’s prognosis compared to waiting for a deceased donor organ. Lisa can now look forward to a better quality of life, enjoying simple pleasures like unrestricted meals and festive celebrations.

Lisa describes the experience as life-changing and encourages families to discuss organ donation wishes. Her story highlights the importance of live organ donation and the profound impact of friendship and altruism.
