Clinical Haematology cares for patients with blood cancers and other non-cancer blood disorders. Our team-based approach means you may be seen by any of our seven consultants, ensuring continuity and high-quality care.
We operate an “attending system” for inpatients, where one consultant oversees ward care for two weeks at a time, with handovers every Friday morning.
Where is care provided?
Outpatient clinics take place in outpatient area 3 on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons.
Outpatients being treated for blood cancers are seen in the Oncology unit on Mondays, where outpatient chemotherapy is given. Some procedures and treatments take place in the Day Medicine Unit.
If you have to be in hospital for management of your condition (an “inpatient”), you will be looked after in Ward A12. This is also where inpatient chemotherapy is delivered. Some people with blood disorders are especially prone to infection and will be in a single room with measures taken to reduce the risk of infection – this is called “protective isolation”. The nurse looking after you can tell you more about this.
Inpatients are seen at least three times weekly by the consultant. Consultant ward rounds take place at the following times:
- Monday Morning
- Wednesday Morning
- Friday Morning
You may be seen by a consultant at other times in addition to this. At other times, you will be looked after by the ward doctors.
There is a consultant haematologist available at all times – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
