You have a health condition called MGUS (Monoclonal Gammopathy of Unknown Significance). This is a benign condition (not cancer), but there is a small risk that it could develop into cancer later in life.
You will be monitored through regular blood tests to check for any changes. For this reason, you have been referred to the MGUS remote follow-up pathway.
What is remote follow-up?
Remote follow-up means that routine clinic appointments are replaced by reviewing your blood test results remotely.
You do not need to attend hospital when you are feeling well. The Haematology Department will send you a reminder letter when your next blood tests are due.
You can have your blood test:
- at your GP surgery, or
- at the Forth Valley Royal Hospital Phlebotomy Drop-in Service.
We will let you know your results by letter.
Changes in your blood test results do not necessarily mean that you have cancer. However, we may need to monitor you more closely by:
- arranging blood tests more frequently
- speaking with you by telephone
- offering a face-to-face clinic appointment
How do I arrange a blood test?
To arrange your blood tests, contact your GP surgery or attend the Phlebotomy Drop-in Service at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.
Opening times: Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.
We will make sure that the required blood tests have been requested on the electronic system.
Can I still access the Haematology service?
Yes. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the Haematology Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) on 01324 567611.
If the clinical team feel that you need to be seen, you will be offered an appointment.
Signs and symptoms to look out for
Please contact the Haematology team if you experience any of the following:
- pain, particularly in your back or ribs
- frequent infections that do not clear easily
- unintentional weight loss
- bones breaking more easily than expected
- new lumps, bumps or swelling, particularly in the neck, armpit or groin
- drenching night sweats that require you to change your nightwear or bedding
