NHS Forth Valley Dental Technologist Among UK’s Top 20 Leaders in Field

Jennifer Alexander, Highly Specialist Chief Orthodontic Technologist and Dental Laboratory Manager at Area 6, Forth Valley Royal Hospital, has been named in the Laboratory Leading 20 – a list celebrating individuals driving the future of dental technology across the UK.

Now in its third year, the Laboratory Leading 20 recognises those whose innovation, leadership, and passion are shaping the evolution of dental technology. The initiative shines a spotlight on professionals whose work continues to elevate standards, inspire others, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in dental laboratories.

Jennifer was the only NHS Dental Technician to be included in this year’s list. She also made history as the first Dental Technician in Scotland to achieve an MSc in Dental Technology from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2019.

An active leader in her profession, Jennifer has served on the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA) Council since 2016, including two terms as Chair, and currently serves as Vice Chair. She plays a major role in organising the OTA’s annual UK conferences, which provide CPD lecture programmes for dental technicians, and frequently contributes to lectures and training workshops both in the UK and internationally, including in Germany, Poland and Italy.

Jennifer also leads the two-day CPD lecture programme at the Dental Technology Showcase at the NEC in Birmingham – the largest event of its kind in the UK.

Her contributions extend beyond professional education. Jennifer has published research on workforce planning for dental technology within NHS Scotland and is currently working with the Scottish Government Dental Professional Advisory Group to establish a new Dental Technology training course in Edinburgh. The first intake of students is planned for the 2026/27 academic year, addressing the current lack of formal training opportunities in Scotland.

At NHS Forth Valley, Jennifer continues to drive innovation within the Dental Laboratory Service. She is currently leading the introduction of a 3D printing digital laboratory service within the Orthodontic Department, which will reduce clinical time and further enhance patient care.
