Freedom of Information (FOISA)
The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 was introduced by the Scottish Parliament on 1 January 2005 to ensure that people have the right to access information held by Scottish public authorities.
The Act states that any person can receive information that they request from a public authority, subject to certain exemptions such as protection of personal data and commercial interests, or national security.
We must provide the information you request promptly and within 20 working days unless the information is exempt under the Act. In some situations, information may be withheld from the public. This will include information that is about to be published, personal information covered by the Data Protection Act, or information that is not in the public interest to be made generally available.
You may also find the Scottish Information Commissioner’s website of use in understanding the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act.
