What is the Pain Management Programme (PMP)?
It is a group programme which aims to:
- l Improve your understanding of persistent pain
- l Increase your confidence in your ability to manage your pain
- l Explore the physiological and psychological elements of living with persistent pain
- l Explore ways of managing difficult emotions associated with your pain
- l Improve your quality of sleep
- l Help reduce fear around physical activity
- l Help you identify what’s meaningful to you, and to develop self-management skills in order to live more fulfilling lives whilst experiencing chronic pain
- l Help you explore ways in which you can help your own friends and family to understand your pain
- l Promote self-awareness
- l Provide a sense of community with other individuals with similar health challenges.
How is the programme delivered?
Our programme is delivered weekly.
| Number of Sessions | Length of Sessions | Group Size | |
| Face-to-Face PMP | 9 | 3 hours | 13 – 15 participants |
We highly advise every participant to attend all 9 sessions, and it is essential to attend the first one. If you miss more than a couple of sessions, you might be asked to attend the next available programme instead.
What should I expect from each session?
The sessions are interactive, and we encourage group discussion which allows you to learn from and connect with other members of the group.
Each session covers a new subject, and is delivered jointly by one of our pain physiotherapists, and one of our pain psychologists.
What happens after my referral?
Every individual that has been referred to a PMP is asked to attend an information session first.
This is done in a group and it often gives you a feel for what to expect from a group setting.
In this information session you will be invited to have a more in depth discussion about the programme and be introduced to some of its content in more detail.
