A polypectomy involves removing a piece of tissue, often resembling the shape of a small mushroom, from your bowel.
This may be sent away for microscopic examination. If this is required, the results will be sent to your GP and arrangements will be made regarding any further follow up if this is required. This can take up to two weeks.
Bleeding
Following the procedure, you may notice some bleeding and spotting of blood when you next open your bowels, or some
smearing of blood on the toilet paper. This should subside over the next few days. However, bleeding can occur up to two weeks after the procedure. If you suddenly lose a lot of fresh blood and you become faint, pale and sweaty, you should attend the Emergency Department to be assessed as you may need to be admitted to hospital.
Post polypectomy syndrome
If at any time after you leave the department you become unwell, feel hot and cold, feel as though your heart is racing, have severe tummy pains and feel sick, please attend the Emergency Department for assessment as you may need to be admitted.
