European First for Groundbreaking Lung Cancer Trial
NHS Forth Valley’s Research and Development Unit has announced a significant achievement as the first unit in Europe to open a new clinical trial focused on research into advanced and recurrent lung cancer.
The trial will test a novel immunotherapy treatment plan, offering hope for patients with limited treatment options.
Led locally by Dr Nicola Steele, NHS Forth Valley Consultant Oncologist with support from Co-Investigators Dr Ben Fulton, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Jennifer Wilson, Lung Clinical Nurse Specialist and Professor Euan Cameron, Consultant Respiratory Physician and NHS Forth Valley Clinical Director for Research and Development, this groundbreaking trial is poised to make an impact in the fight against lung cancer. The research team has worked diligently to meet all necessary requirements to initiate this study, which is now open to recruitment for eligible patients attending the lung cancer service at NHS Forth Valley.
Dr Steele said: “We recognise the critical importance of research in improving clinical outcomes for our patients. Evidence shows that hospitals actively involved in research consistently achieve better outcomes across various specialties. With greater patient engagement, we hope to enhance services for the broader NHS Forth Valley community.”
Professor Cameron added: “We want to use this opportunity to raise awareness about the vital research work we do here in Forth Valley and highlight the importance of research participation. Together, we can make a difference in advancing the treatment and care for those affected by lung cancer.”
This clinical trial marks a key milestone in the ongoing work of NHS Forth Valley’s Research and Development Unit to explore innovative treatment options. The team encourages patients to discuss with their clinicians the opportunities available to participate in research, which could lead to the development of new, potentially lifesaving, tests and treatments.
NHS Forth Valley Research and Development Unit is focused on the continued advancement of medical research and its application to clinical practice, offering new hope to patients and contributing to the ongoing fight against many illnesses and disease, including lung cancer. The Unit works with leading clinicians and researchers to explore new treatment options and contribute to the improvement of health services.
