What is the Clinical Neuropsychology Service?
The Clinical Neuropsychology Service is a specialist team within the Psychological Therapies Service. We work with adults with a known or suspected neurological condition, which impacts on their mental wellbeing and quality of life.
Most people referred to the neuropsychology service will have a diagnosis of a neurological condition, which may be affecting their thinking, emotions and/or behaviour. Some of the neurological conditions we commonly work with are brain injury, epilepsy, brain tumour, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Parkinsons Disease. We also see people with functional neurological disorder (FND) and other less common conditions. If you do not have a diagnosis you may be referred to our Service as part of the assessment process by a Neurologist or another health care professional.
Who are we?
Our service is made up of a small team of Clinical Neuropsychologists, Clinical Psychologists and Trainee Clinical Psychologists who work together to promote and support the wellbeing of people with neurological conditions living in the Forth Valley area. We often work with colleagues in other areas such as Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Neurology and Psychiatry.
What do we do?
In the Clinical Neuropsychology Service, we offer assessment, therapy and rehabilitation with the aim of providing person centred care tailored to specific neurological conditions.
- We provide neuropsychological assessments to help understand the underlying causes of significant changes in people’s memory and other thinking skills.
- We use evidence-based practice to help inform diagnosis and advise on treatment.
- We deliver evidence based psychological therapies including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
- We provide cognitive rehabilitation and can advise on behaviour management.
- We offer Consultation to other health care professionals.
Some common emotional difficulties experienced by people with neurological conditions include: low mood or depression, anxiety, fatigue, frustration or anger, sleep difficulties, difficulties adjusting to your condition, and addressing ongoing barriers to self-care (including difficulties managing your medical treatment or appointments).
Where is the Clinical Neuropsychology Service based?
We are based at Falkirk Community Hospital, where we offer outpatient appointments.
Online appointments can be offered using a video call service called Near Me powered by Attend Anywhere. Near Me is free, safe, confidential and easy to access. You will need a laptop, tablet or smartphone and access to the internet. It is important when arranging a Near Me appointment to have a confidential space to receive the call.
We also offer an inpatient service at the Specialist Rehabilitation Service at Stirling Community Hospital.
