What is a Granuloma?
A granuloma is a small red lump that can grow around your stoma. It is made of extra tissue (a bit like scar tissue). It looks red and moist, and may bleed slightly when touched.
Granulomas are not cancer and are not dangerous, but they can be bothersome.
Why Do Granulomas Happen?
Granulomas can develop for different reasons, such as:
- Friction from the pouch or baseplate rubbing on the skin
- A stoma that sticks out only a little, causing irritation
- Natural healing changes in your skin around the stoma
Do Granulomas Need Treatment?
Sometimes they settle by themselves, but often they need a little help. Granulomas can:
- Make your pouch harder to stick
- Cause bleeding or soreness
- Leak under the pouch if they raise the skin
Treatments
Your stoma nurse may recommend:
- Protective powders or pastes to stop rubbing
- Silver nitrate sticks (applied in clinic) to shrink the granuloma
- Different pouches or accessories to fit better
Treatment is safe and usually works well.

- Keep it simple – don’t try new creams or remedies without advice
- Be gentle – avoid scrubbing around the stoma; pat the skin dry instead
Questions You May Have
Will granulomas go away on their own?
Sometimes very small granulomas settle by themselves, but many need treatment to stop bleeding or help your pouch stick.
Do granulomas mean my stoma is unhealthy?
No. Granulomas are common and not harmful. They are simply overgrowths of tissue around the stoma.
Is treatment painful?
Silver nitrate treatment may sting a little, but it is quick and safe. Your nurse will explain everything.
Can I still wear my normal pouch?
Often yes, but your nurse might suggest a different product or accessory if leaks are happening.
