What to expect during referral
A Children’s Physiotherapist will process the request for assistance. Based on the information supplied, you may be contacted to arrange an initial appointment or to signpost your child to another service. Depending on the nature of your child’s condition they may be placed on a waiting list and you will be informed of this by letter. Once your child has reached the top of the waiting list, you will be contacted to arrange an appointment. If you have any concerns or their condition worsens you should make an appointment with your GP.
Who do I contact if I need to change my appointment?
Please phone our Physiotherapy department as soon as possible if you need to re-arrange or cancel your appointment. You can contact the department on 01786 454684, Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
What happens if I do not bring my child to their appointment?
If you do not bring your child to their initial appointment which has been verbally accepted, without contacting the physiotherapy department your child will be discharged from the service. If you do not bring your child their return appointment which has been verbally agreed your child will be discharged from the physiotherapy service and we will write to the health professional who referred you to advise them of this.
If your child’s appointment has been sent by post, you will receive a “fail to attend letter” and will be given 2 weeks from the date on the letter to contact our department to request a further appointment. If you do not contact our department, your child will be discharged from our service.
What to expect from your Physiotherapy appointment?
Your physiotherapist will discuss with yourself and the child the details of the request for assistance, for example information related to past medical history, medication, general health and social history, including hobbies and school.
A physical examination may be carried out which will vary depending on the specific condition. If there is a definitive diagnosis then this will be discussed along with a prognosis and details of how/ if physiotherapy can help. Please make sure that the child or young person is wearing appropriate clothing e.g. shorts and t-shirt/vest for the appointment.
The physiotherapist will want to gain an insight into how you feel, so is very important to discuss your expectations and set realistic goals that physiotherapy can help you achieve at this stage.
Possible treatments will be explained based on the best clinical evidence available. The potential benefits and risks of any treatment options will also be discussed.
