A stress echocardiography is an ultrasound scan of the heart. This is a highly specialised scan which is not available widely in the UK. The service has been supported by generous public donations and fundraising supported by the British Heart Foundation.
How long does it take?
The scan time can vary from 45–90 minutes, however, most of this is preparation time and the scan only lasts around 20 minutes. You will be aware of a faster heartbeat for three to four minutes.
Medication
Please do not take any angina medication on the day of the scan, particular, you should not take beta blockers (these include propranolol, atenolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, sotalol and metoprolol).
If you are taking verapamil or diltiazem, then this should also be missed on the day of the scan. If you are unsure or have any questions about your medication, please contact the Cardiology Department in advance on 01324 566964.
What does the scan involve?
You will be asked to remove clothing from the top half of your body and a gown will be provided. You will then be asked to lie on a couch on your left side.
Medication will be injected into a vein in your arm to make the heart beat more quickly. You may feel the heart beating more forcefully (just like when exercising) but the sensation should not be unpleasant.
A small probe and gel will be placed on the front and side of your chest to allow staff to see your heart on a screen.
Transport
If you are eligible for hospital transport for medical reasons, please contact staff on 01324 566964 at least four working days prior to your appointment.
When will I receive the results?
The recorded images will be reviewed and a report will be sent to the healthcare professional who requested the scan.
Please note: the results will not be available at the time of the scan, the healthcare professional who requested the scan will arrange to let you know the results. This is usually done by contacting your GP Practice who can advise on treatment or other investigations, if required.
Driving after the scan
You should not drive for six hours after the scan as one of the drugs used can cause temporary blurring of vision.
Contact details
The scan is performed by a team of consultant cardiologists, specialist nurses and sonographers. Should you require any additional information please contact 01324 566964.
