The Specialist Rehabilitation Service is a nurse and AHP led rehabilitation unit which provides specialist care, mainly for patients with a wide range of neurological and other conditions who have complex rehabilitation needs. The service is also part of the Scottish Major Trauma Network.
What the team does
Staff often work with people with brain injuries and a wide range of neurological conditions, but can see any patient who requires intensive rehabilitation from two or more disciplines (e.g., physiotherapy and speech and language therapy). Their aim is to help patients regain skills lost due to an accident or illness, including physical, cognitive and communication abilities. The team engages patients in daily therapy sessions and work with them to achieve their rehabilitation goals.
The service is made up of nurses, nursing assistants, therapists (including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians), therapy assistants and clinical psychologists. Support can also be provided by a rehabilitation consultant, pharmacists, psychiatrists and orthotists, if required.
At SRU, we recognise that family and friends play a key role in our patients’ wellbeing and recovery. As such, we encourage them to participate in their loved ones’ rehabilitation and join therapy sessions and social activities wherever appropriate.
What rehabilitation involves
Rehabilitation in the SRU is an intensive process that requires patients to participate in daily therapy, along with the support of their family and friends. Patients usually participate in several therapy sessions a day.
They are encouraged to set goals and take ownership of their rehabilitation by being active participants in their therapy programme and practising between sessions.
The unit
The Specialist Rehabilitation Unit is based in the Thistle Suite, in the Bellfield Centre at Stirling Health and Care Village. It has comfortable single rooms, all furnished with a mini fridge, an ensuite bathroom with shower, a TV and space for visitors.
