MenB vaccination
Following recent outbreaks of meningitis in the UK, a new Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccination programme is taking place for young people from July 2026 (see local drop-in clinics below). This time-limited programme is being offered to some older teenagers and some new college and university students who are at higher risk of exposure to meningococcal group B bacteria.
This is in addition to the existing MenB vaccination programme for babies which is part of the national childhood vaccination programme and the Meningitis ACWY vaccine currently offered to young people.
The MenB vaccine is given in two doses at least four weeks apart and it’s essential to get both doses for full protection.
Which young people are eligible for the MenB vaccine?
You can have the MenB vaccine if you answer yes to any of the following:
- Were you born between 1 March 2008 and 28 February 2009?
- Were you in S6 during the 2025 to 2026 academic year?
- Are you under 25 and starting your first undergraduate university course in the 2026 to 2027 academic year (including international students)
- Are you under 25, starting your first college course in the 2026 to 2027 academic year, and living in shared student accommodation (including international students)

Further clinics are planned on or near the University of Stirling campus in September 2026, with details to be shared as soon as they are confirmed. If you are starting college or university in the Forth Valley area after the summer but are currently living in another NHS Board area, you should arrange to be vaccinated where you are staying before your course begins. More information on how to get the MenB vaccine in other NHS Boards is available on NHS Inform.
Why is it important to get the MenB vaccine?
Meningococcal B disease is a rare but life-threatening bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (which can result in permanent brain and spinal cord damage) and sepsis (a serious reaction to an infection that develops very quickly and needs urgent hospital treatment).
Further information on the MenB vaccination is available on the NHS Inform website and details of other vaccination programmes can be found here. If you have an enquiry, you can contact the local vaccination team on 0800 130 3120 or email fv.vaccinationenquiries@nhs.scot.
