Improving Health and Wellbeing in Forth Valley Prisons
There are 3 Scottish Prison Service establishments within Forth Valley NHS board area:
- HMP Glenochil
- HMPYOI Stirling
- HMPYOI Polmont
The people we care for in the justice system experience greater health inequalities and often have poorer health outcomes than the general population. Evidence shows that they are at greater risk of harms arising from issues such as excess alcohol consumption, social deprivation, problem substance use, blood-borne virus infection, mental ill-health and smoking (Brutus et al, 2015).
Action to improve the health and wellbeing of people in prison benefits from a system-wide approach that minimises health risks, respects dignity and human rights and provides services equivalent to those provided for the general population.
It considers the social determinants of health and wellbeing in prison and targets all levels of prison life, personal, social, organisational and the physical environment and recognises their interdependence in relation to health and wellbeing.
It aims to engage all those involved with the prison — residents, staff, families, the wider community, NHS prison health care, allied health professionals and other sectors and agencies involved directly or indirectly.
Work areas currently supported include strategy and policy development, workforce development, recovery, trauma informed approaches, workforce wellbeing, life-skills, self-care, prevention and early intervention.
